- Motivational Interviewing and Behaviour Change Workshop
This one-day workshop will teach you how to enhance your client engagement and also enable you to assist clients with other lifestyle behavioural changes such as those required for exercise adherence and smoking cessation.
Motivational interviewing is an important counselling skill which has been incorporated into the behaviour change workshop to enable trainers to guide clients who are ambivalent about lifestyle change (sitting on the fence) and help them take the next step.
Using motivational interviewing based skills, trainers can build clients self-confidence and also improve their client retention.
Using the techniques taught in the behaviour change workshop the weight-loss system developed in Dr Gary Mendoza’s research (the LEAN Man System) achieved an 86% success rate both in the UK and New Zealand (NZ). This programme has since been adopted by the Manawatu Public Health region (NZ) for use in the community.
The one-day workshop is delivered by Dr Gary Mendoza. The day is very interactive and practical with all content explained and demonstrated. The workshop includes a lot of ‘real play’ which offers participants the opportunity to work on their problems (be these business or personal) throughout the day. On completion of the workshop, you will have a toolbox of techniques that you can apply to initiate change and run successful weight-loss programmes. All techniques are based on evidence-based research. You also receive a free textbook: Motivational Interviewing in Nutrition and Fitness.

This workshop builds on the Behaviour Change Coaching e-learning course, allowing you opportunity to practice and develop your motivational interviewing skills.
Delivered by Dr Gary Mendoza, a behaviour change expert, university lecturer and personal trainer, who was trained personally by the founders of motivational interviewing, Professors Stephen Rollnick and William Miller.
Gain better results with clients by motivating and empowering them to adhere to their programme and follow your advice.

I attended the workshop with Gary following suggestions from a few other professionals in the industry, who highly recommended it. I wasn't sure what to expect, as I had never heard of MI before. The content was truly eye-opening and has made me aware of all the nuances involved in a consultation and when interacting with clients on a day to day basis. I will be using the skills to get even better results with clients and look forward to applying all the skills provided.

The behavioural change seminar I attended in March was 2 days well spent. We covered and experienced first hand, new ways of talking to clients, how we approach their potential problems, issues they experience, and how best to help an individual to switch their mindset and take on a new thinking perspective. Not only that, but we learned how to listen to someone, how to use the information we are given and enable them to see a more positive and enlightening way to go about their desired change. Gary delivers the course in a relaxed, friendly and encouraging way, that inspires and leaves you with some new skills. Thank you, I will be back to learn more.

I have utilised the certification gained through the Nutrition academy to progress my studies further, enrolling on to the BSc Hons Human Nutrition degree at Bath Spa University, where I currently study in my second year. I would without hesitation recommend The Nutrition Academy for all those interested in going forward with an evidence-based approach to nutrition and those wanting to gain a good foundation of knowledge before taking their careers further.

Having run my own health and fitness business and studied all aspects of this area for the last 5 years I felt I was still missing something which will help me understand how to help clients move forward positively and stay on that path of success. I found this course (Motivational Interviewing) to be the game-changer in my business and the clients don't even know what I am up too as it has integrated nicely into the process.

Launched in 2011, the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) is the professional development body for the UK’s sport, fitness and physical activity sector and has been awarded chartered status by the Privy Council. CIMSPA provides leadership, support and empowerment for professionals working in sport and physical activity and is the strategic lead for professional development in the sector.
CIMSPA has been tasked by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), backed by Sport England and employers, with leading the sport and physical activity sectors workforce development programme. This will be achieved by creating a clear and rigorous set of employer-led standards for all sport and exercise professionals, with a similar clear and rigorous system for assessment, awarding and validating qualifications.
CIMSPA is recognised as the authoritative, single unified voice for the sector by government departments, key agencies and partners, including Sport England, Public Health England, ukactive, Sport and Recreation Alliance, Sporta and cCLOA. The institute has membership options for everyone working in, or interested in working in, the sport and physical activity world – from student and apprentice through to service director and CEO. CIMSPA already provides a route to chartered status for those working in leisure operations, and is developing similar routes for the whole of the sector. For more information go to www.cimspa.co.uk.

I have been studying with Future Fit Training for the past year and can honestly say how amazing they are as a training provider. They cover every basis, you get excellent support from the tutors, the online training is intense and thorough, the workshops are fantastic and the tutors themselves are extremely knowledgeable.

Future Fit training programme was very straight forward, but I felt I was missing out by not having any hands-on experience with an actual coach/tutor. A lot of my marks were lower than they could have been due to not fully understanding the subject or item as well as I should, but not having a quick reference point available to verify anything was a drawback.

Becoming a personal trainer isn’t cheap. It’s an investment, which can pay for itself if you come out the other side with the requisite skills to earn a living as a PT. For that reason, it’s not worth cutting corners. When searching for training providers FFT looked like the obvious choice. They had excellent reviews, have been providing expert tuition for 24 years, have a 97% student satisfaction rate and were named UK Active "Training Provider of the Year" in 2016 and 2017. Their part-time online course also meant I could study at home around freelance projects and work at my own pace.
