Will Brooks

Personal trainer and PhD researcher Will Brooks turned redundancy into a second chance at fitness, now researching exercise for people with severe multiple sclerosis, a cause close to home.

Graduate Story

A Career Interrupted, Twice

Will completed his Level 2 with Future Fit back in 2009/10, but a long-term injury pushed him out of the fitness industry and into a series of kitchen, warehouse and office jobs he didn’t enjoy. Wanting to get back to doing something he loved, and knowing from his Level 2 that Future Fit would provide good training, he returned to complete his Level 3 Personal Training.

A second setback followed years later when redundancy from an office job came with a reasonable payout, money he saw as his last shot at getting back onto the career path he actually wanted.

Training With Future Fit

The Business Module That Built a Career

Coming back to Future Fit the second time round, Will found the course more streamlined and felt more mature and better equipped to apply what he was learning in the real world. He singles out the business module as one of the biggest turning points, setting him up to hit the ground running as a self-employed PT in a way he hadn’t felt prepared for the first time around.

The anatomy and physiology content re-sparked his enjoyment of that side of learning, eventually leading him to a Masters in Sports Performance, funded using his redundancy payout. He also credits his Level 3 assessor, Ricardo, saying he still applies things Ricardo taught him in half a day with his clients today.

Always Moving Forward

From the Gym Floor to a PhD in MS Research

Will grew his PT business quickly after launching in April 2021, reaching self-sufficiency within a few months, all while studying full-time and juggling lecture days with evening client sessions. His Masters redirected him away from elite sport and into occupational performance and exercise science, working on funded research projects before a PhD opportunity in exercise for severe multiple sclerosis came along.

The subject is personal: his mum has MS, and one of his favourite clients to work with also has MS, someone he coached from scratch to competing in powerlifting, now qualified for nationals. Alongside his research, he coaches as Defensive Coordinator for Army American Football, helping prepare the team for the upcoming Inter-Services after recently securing category two status.

Every time the Tutor, Ricardo, opened his mouth, a really useful piece of information came out. I'm still using some of the stuff he taught me in half a day now with my PT clients.
