Noel Hayden – Life As A Personal Trainer

Where it all began

I returned to the UK in August 2016 after 14 years in Ireland. I spent a year focusing full time on my BA in Sports Coaching to enhance and expand on the fitness and sports qualifications I have gained over more than 10 years in the fitness industry.

I then began the search for a job. I found the vacancy with YPT at the same time that I interviewed to be a tutor with FFT. I only found out afterwards about the partnership between YPT and FFT.

Now, I work as a PT at Brighouse (West Yorkshire) Leisure Centre with YPT and I work as a tutor for FFT’s Personal Training and Gym Instructor courses.

Becoming a Personal Trainer with YPT

Moving back to the UK after living abroad for a number of years, I needed to understand the whole area of PT and how the business worked.

I found the job advertised with YPT and looked into working with their company. Everything I found convinced me to apply for their job – they have positions all across the UK and they offer a lot of support and resources to PTs.

It only took about three weeks from first seeing their advert to being offered the position I now have through YPT.

Once I started working with them, I was assigned to a regional manager who was familiar with everything I needed to get started as a PT in that area.

My regional manager had been through everything a new trainer will have to, from what to do each day, how to track your progress, what ideas work (and some that might not), how the facility you are in can help you and what other support you might need to develop your own business.

I get weekly emails from YPT, face to face meetings and telephone support as well as free website resources and business support. Does any other PT company offer that level of support?

Would you recommend YPT to newly qualified PTs?

Yes! The one thing you need as a new trainer is support in building your business, to try do this with no support is very tough.

Everything YPT offers is aimed at you becoming successful, including 12 weeks of business support, free resources and marketing information, an online booking system and ongoing one to one support.

You need to get the experience of training clients, so why not take away the worry of business planning and marketing when YPT does all that for you?

YPT and FFT – shared values

As a PT, I need to be associated with brand leading organisations and standards. Working with FFT, ukactive’s ‘Training Provider of the Year’ and having membership with CIMSPA are two things that show that I care about reputation when delivering PT to my clients.

When I contacted YPT, it was clear that they delivered services to the same level: they are also affiliated with CIMSPA, were recognised at the Active Training Awards and Flame Awards and provide ongoing support to their members.

These standards are important: as a tutor you want your students to be as well prepared as possible when they complete their courses. With YPT it is the same, they want you to understand what is required to be a success.

Because of their shared values and ethos, YPT and FFT make ideal partners. This could be why they have been working together to deliver the highest standards in the fitness industry for more than six years.
