Former NHS doctor of 18 years Hannah Enguell now blends medicine and personal training, helping clients bridge the gap between healthcare and lifestyle change.
Hannah spent 18 years as an NHS doctor, training first in acute medicine before moving into geriatric medicine and later becoming a consultant in general medicine within a diabetes department. Running a DVT assessment clinic around 2013, she met a patient managing diabetes who asked her for diet and exercise advice, and realised she simply didn’t have the toolkit within the NHS to give it to him.
Around the same time, she moved from London to the Midlands, took on a personal trainer herself for the first time, and felt the benefits first hand, both physically and for stress management. Two years later, she enrolled on her first personal training course, determined to bring the worlds of medicine and exercise closer together.
With years of geriatric medicine experience already behind her, and a growing focus on frailty, muscle health and long-term healthspan, Hannah chose Future Fit to complete her Level 4 Personal Training, Exercise Referral, and Nutrition qualifications. She wanted a training provider that could offer a genuinely high-level skill set, rather than repeating basic anatomy and physiology she already knew well.
She says the guidelines and evidence-based frameworks she gained gave her real confidence translating her medical knowledge into practice, from structuring a full training session to safely coaching a client managing diabetes, something she couldn’t have done as a doctor alone.
Hannah now works predominantly with women navigating perimenopause and menopause, offering a supportive, trusted alternative to jumping straight to medical intervention, while being clear that she doesn’t offer medical advice within her personal training practice. She’s also building a business with her husband developing companion foods for people using GLP-1 weight-loss medications, drawing on her nutrition qualification to support the muscle and bone health side of that journey.
Longer term, she hopes to develop a clinic combining biomarker testing, personal training and nutrition, positioning exercise professionals as part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team of the future.
