This course is part of our Level 5 Nutrition Course range and is offered as the highest level of study outside of a degree. Gaining this qualification will give an advanced understanding of how diet supports the immune system. Having a qualification like this can also strengthen your application to study at degree level if that is the path you choose. Discover this course’s content below.
This topic introduces the cells, tissues and organs of the immune system and explains how they function to prevent infection and disease. You will explore the different types of immunity such as innate, acquired and passive and how factors such as ageing can affect our immune function. You will also learn about what happens when the immune system fails to function correctly, including immunodeficiency and autoimmune disorders.
In recent years, the growing understanding of the fundamental role of gut bacteria in the regulation of the immune system has revolutionised the field of immunology. You will discover how diet, including prebiotic and probiotic foods, can support the balance of your gut bacteria. You will also learn about factors affecting the permeability of the intestine and the development and potential consequences of ‘leaky gut’ syndrome.
A diet rich in vitamins and minerals is important for many aspects of health including immune function. You will learn about the specific roles that micronutrients and antioxidants play in the immune system and explore the potential impact of micronutrient deficiency on the risk of infectious and non-infectious diseases. You will also explore whether the use of vitamin and mineral supplements can be beneficial in preventing viral infections such as cold and flu.
Auto-immune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis and allergies are increasingly common. You will learn how diet is implicated in the development of some auto-immune conditions. You will also learn about the evidence supporting the effectiveness of different dietary approaches in managing the symptoms of auto-immune conditions.
You will discover what dietary practices are associated with optimal immune function. Diets low in processed foods and higher in antioxidants, Omega-3 fatty acids, and certain herbs and spices have all been reported to support better immune function. You will also explore the potential benefits of anti-inflammatory diets for the prevention and management of certain chronic health conditions such as cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
