Success story - Lynn McBrearty
Lynn’s interest in fitness really took off after a eureka moment. Her discoveries had such a positive impact on her life that she wanted to share her knowledge so others could benefit. Find out which courses she rated on her diploma and why.
Where did your initial interest in fitness and personal training come from?
My interest in fitness and personal training evolved over a period of time. As a runner, it seemed like I was always suffering from niggling injuries and I soon learnt that if I didn't work on strengthening the muscles needed for running I would be spending more time in the physio than out running! So I learnt a stronger body meant a better runner. My next eureka moment was learning about the difference a healthy diet has on exercise performance.
My evolution made such a positive impact on my life I wanted to others to benefit in the same way.
Why the School of Personal Training?
I chose Future Fit as my training provider because of the experience that they offered, not only for the knowledge of personal training, but also as a training provider that is unbelievably good value for money.
Straight away I was impressed with the modules in the Diploma in Advanced Personal Training. No other training provider offered such a holistic approach to personal training and being a personal trainer.
What training have you undertaken with Future Fit?
As part of the Diploma in Advanced Personal Training I started my studies with Anatomy and Physiology and then Gym Instructor. These two courses provided an excellent foundation for the rest of the diploma. Next up was Nutrition and Weight Management; this course has proved to be invaluable to me on a day-to-day basis. You will be amazed at the random questions people ask and the great thing is I can answer their questions!
Next up were the Advanced Anatomy and Physiology and Personal Trainer. These built on from the previous courses. The really impressive part at this stage in my study was the consistency and linkage between courses. I didn't have to waste time revising previous courses 'just in case I missed something' - everything followed a logical sequence, which is not always the case with some training providers.
The next three courses I studied were Nutrition for Sport and Exercise, Client Psychology and Motivation and Marketing for Fitness Professionals. In honesty, if someone asked before I started my diploma if these courses would be useful to me as a personal trainer I would have said 'no'. However, that would have been the wrong answer! I use the knowledge gained from the Client Psychology and Motivation and the marketing courses on a daily basis. I don't think I actually realised how much I learnt from the client psychology course at the time. However, as soon as I talk to a potential client I know immediately what their attitude to exercise is, which is particularly useful when dealing with GP referrals.
As for the Marketing for Fitness Professionals course, it really helped to focus me on how to set up my own business. I have re-used a lot of the material I used for my portfolio!
The final course in the diploma was Exercise Referral for Health Management, which really was the icing on the cake. This has enabled me to work with my local authority.
I've studied one course outside of my diploma and that was Exercise for Fat Loss. Again as you come to expect with Future Fit this course was easy to study because of the consistency between the other courses.
My current role
Whilst studying for my diploma in personal training I was working full time in a corporate environment, and had been for 34 years. I have recently left the corporate world to become a Fitness Coach and develop my own fitness company 'A Fitter Life'
I have lots of ideas for the future! My immediate future is focused on developing my company A Fitter Life. As part of that I am looking to provide healthy eating and regular exercise workshops to individuals and companies, along with offering personal training and group exercise classes. And I am also working with my local GP Referral scheme administrators.
My top student tip?
Never say never and go for it!
