School Of Nutrition Posted Sep 08, 2014 Future Fit Training

Seeds are very popular with heathy-food enthusiasts. Here we compare two favourites: flaxseeds and hemp seeds.

Here are some highlights:

  • Both provide similar amounts of calories and fat.
  • While flaxseeds are higher in fibre, hemp seeds contain more protein.
  • Both are great sources of essential fatty acids, which are needed for many functions in the body, from building healthy cells to maintaining brain and nerve function. Flaxseeds contain more omega-3 fatty acids, while hemp seeds contain more omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are particularly important for lowering inflammation and protecting against heart disease.

OUR WINNER: Its a tie!

You can't go wrong with either one of these. They each have something to offer nutritionally. If you are trying to boost your fibre intake, go for flax seeds. On the other hand, if you eat seeds for their protein value, then go for hemp seeds.

Having said that, while most of us already get plenty of omega-6s in our diets, some of us may not be getting the recommended level of omega-3s. In that case, I would suggest that you choose flaxseeds over hemp seeds.

Sprinkle whichever one you choose over your cereal, yogurt or salad, or add them to any goodies you bake.
