Level 2 Gym Instructor Course Overview

Our Level 2 Gym Instructor course is a fundamental foundation for which to build a successful career within the fitness industry. This course is nationally accredited and once qualified you will become a Level 2 Gym Instructor, also known as a fitness instructor at Level 2.

This course is ideally suited for learners who have a genuine passion for wellness and want to build their future in the fitness industry with a level of learning above industry standard, this underpinning knowledge is the precursor to the Level 3 Personal Training Qualification. This course will be delivered both online and in-person by tutors who have years of expertise in the industry.

The Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification operates as a stand-alone qualification, enabling you to work as a fitness instructor with a gym or fitness centre. However, as this is the basis of all our Level 3 and Level 4 personal training qualifications, it is included in all our higher-level courses. Unlike other Gym Instructor Courses, our course is mapped out to show a clear progression either to a higher level of learning or into a career.

The Gym Instructor Level 2 course is worth 20 CIMSPA CPD points.

Awarding Bodies:

This newly updated (2020) Level 2 fitness instructing course qualification is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) and was one of the first to meet the CIMSPA Professional Standard for Gym Instructor.

Students must be over the age of 16 and we recommend they attend a gym regularly

What you'll learn

Anatomy and Physiology

This is the starting point for all fitness professionals, understanding the theory of anatomy and physiology and what happens to the body when we exercise.This course gives a fundamental understanding of exercise benefits, programme design and good working practice, including health and safety considerations. It is foundational knowledge for everyone embarking on a career in the fitness industry

Level 2 Gym Instructor

This course prepares students to plan and instruct exercise sessions and basic programmes in a gym. Students will learn the principles of exercise prescription and how to teach clients to safely use a variety of equipment.

Functional Training

This module will provide you with the skills and knowledge they need to safely and effectively instruct clients in key functional movement patterns and training principles, with range of equipment found in health club and leisure centre facilities, as well as minimal equipment and bodyweight.

On this Level 2 Fitness Instructor Course, you will be taught through our blended learning format; gaining the essential knowledge to underpin your practical training at home and developing teaching skills in a tutor-led professional environment.

What does a Gym Instructor do?

A gym instructor will spend a lot of their time circulating the gym, making sure that members are having a good experience. They will also usually be responsible for leading several exercise classes depending on their skill set and level of personal training qualification.

A typical day might involve

  • helping to open the gym and get it ready before members arrive
  • greeting members as they arrive
  • chatting with members
  • delivering a couple of classes
  • helping to ensure that the gym stays neat and tidy
  • delivering gym inductions, (which involve showing members around the gym and teaching them how to use the equipment safely)
