Ingredients

Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Hazelnuts (13%), Fat-Reduced Cocoa (7.4%), Skimmed Milk Powder (6.6%), Whey Powder, Emulsifier: Lecithin (Soya), Vanillin

Medium Fat Soft Cheese 56%, Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Fat-Reduced Cocoa Powder, Cocoa Butter, Skimmed Milk Powder, Whey Powder, Vegetable Fat, Milk Fat, Stabilizers (Locust Bean Gum, Carrageenan), Emulsifiers (Soya Lecithin, E 442), Flavourings, Citric Acid

Highlights:

  • For the same serving size, Nutella has double the amount of sugar and 3 times more fat than the chocolate cream cheese spread.
  • The chocolate cream cheese spread has a much longer ingredients list than Nutella, with many additives, including an emulsifier, a preservative and flavourings.
  • Although Nutella is made with hazelnuts, these are only the third ingredient in the list. In other words, there is more sugar and vegetable oil than hazelnuts in the spread.
  • OUR WINNER: Nutella!

Neither of these two products is a great choice to spread on your toast. If we had to choose one, we would reluctantly pick Nutella. Although higher in calories, fat and sugar than the cream cheese spread, at least it contains the goodness of hazelnuts and has fewer additives.

However, there are better alternatives to spread on your toast. For a similar caloric load, natural nut or seed butters would contain no added sugar, more fibre and no additives. So we recommend that you save any type of chocolate flavoured spreads for an occasional treat only.
