Future Fit Training Makes Your Mind Up - An 'Introduction to the Psychology of Behaviour Change'
December 8th 2005 saw Future Fit Training launch a groundbreaking new course aimed at any exercise specialist or health professional working on a one-to-one basis in the field of exercise or weight management. The “Introduction to the Psychology of Behaviour Change” was launched with a thought-provoking presentation at the REPS convention in London.
Future Fit Training has identified that it is simply not enough for health and fitness professionals to understand how to prescribe safe and effective exercise, or to be able to analyse the dietary intake of a particular client. To be really successful, health and fitness professionals need to understand human behaviour and develop a range of tools that will help them recognise and understand how to support clients in making behavioural changes that lead to long lasting results.
This unique two-day course, that will be available from January 2006, explores the psychology of behaviour change and the theory and practical application of motivational interviewing skills. It has been designed to meet the core knowledge requirements for Behaviour Change outlined in the occupational standards for NVQ Level 3 in Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise, and attracts 24 CPD points on the Register of Exercise Professionals.

Future Fit Training launches a foray onto the small screen in time for 2006 with a new DVD where the emphasis is on the student.
To enhance the learning experience of its students, Future Fit Training have created an extensive interactive DVD that will provide a visual resource for all participants on its gym instructor courses.
The DVD, which will be launched on January 1st 2006, provides students with a comprehensive demonstration of all the exercises contained within the national curriculum at level 2. It includes detailed descriptions, teaching instructions and coaching points.
Rob Johnson, Director of Future Fit Training, emphasised the significance of this DVD:
“Future Fit Training has always aimed to provide its students with the most supportive learning experience possible, and to make use of up-to-date technologies. Girl Power in Melbourne
Future Fit Training’s eight stone tutor Kate Howard takes girl power to new levels as she competes in the Commonwealth Games weightlifting event in Melbourne, Australia.
Don’t let her diminutive figure and girl-next-door appearance fool you; Kate Howard is a girl not to be messed with. March 2006 sees Kate continue her challenge for world weightlifting acclaim in Australia in the Commonwealth Games Under 53 kg category, a step up from her usual 48kg category.
Having finished 9th in her category in the European Championships in Bulgaria and setting a new record in the Welsh trials, Kate has been training hard to improve on that performance.
“I’ve been putting in the work in the gym and looking at my nutritional intake with Gary Mendoza the Future Fit Training nutritionist so I feel excited and ready”, beamed Kate, clearly a woman at the top of her game.
“I’m relatively new to the sport compared to some of the other girls so I’m still learning but with the more events I do, the more experience and confidence I gain which will put me in good stead”.
Kate is hoping that Melbourne will be her moment to push for honours.
“Of course I want Gold and to beat my personal best, but I think that anything gained from competing will benefit my progression in the discipline. The World Championships in October gave me more competitive experience against some great athletes, which will put me in good stead for The Commonwealth Games in March.”
One thing is for sure though, Great Britain’s medal hope will not be running scared of the opposition.
“People think because I am not a stereotypical weightlifter, then it must be intimidating to be up against some of the more conventional lifters, but that’s not my style. I get up and do my own thing and have great respect for all the other girls and we all get on great. But the only person that will affect my performance is me.”

Future Fit Training passes 30,000th member on REPs
Fitness Instructor Emma Cressey has become the 30,000th member of the Register of Exercise Professionals after finishing Future Fit Training’s Advanced Exercise Specialist Programme.
Emma, from Derbyshire, has only been working in the industry since July after deciding she wanted a career change from media sales management.
Now registered as a Gym Instructor at level 2, with Future Fit qualifications in gym training, pilates and nutrition, Emma is hoping to start teaching pilates classes next month and is now working towards qualifying as a personal trainer and nutritional adviser.
She said: “I was really excited to hear I was the 30,000th member of REPs. When I finished my Future Fit course joining REPs seemed the obvious next step. I can't believe there are 30,000 of us out there but it feels good to be part of it!"
The Register of Exercise Professionals was set up in 2001 to safeguard and promote the health and interests of people using the services of exercise and fitness professionals and to protect the interest of those professionals and to encourage excellence in their fields and continued career development.
Since then the Register has gone from strength to strength – as well as developing benefits for is own members it is now being used as a model for other registers around the world and has played an instrumental part in the setting of national standards in disciplines including pilates and yoga.
But this success has only been possible thanks to the support of training organisations like Future Fit Training as REPs’ Registrar Cliff Collins explains: “Although from the very start those working in the frontline of the industry were keen to join the Register their signing up has only been part of our success. Without training providers using our levels of registration in their courses or employers recognising those categories our work would have been impossible.
“It, therefore, gives me great pleasure to not only announce the registration of our 30,000th member – a huge milestone by any measure – but also that Emma qualified through Future Fit Training who have been one of our keenest supporters from the start.”
Future Fit Training’s Training and Development manager Kevan Wayne-Morris commented on how important an event this is for the health and fitness industry. He said: “It goes to show how far the industry has come on in such a short space of time, and we are delighted to have made a significant contribution to the success of REPs. It is rewarding to see Future Fit Training making a real difference, by driving up standards of professionalism.”
Emma will be presented with a commemorative certificate at the REPs’ Convention, to be held at Congress Hall in London on Thursday 8th December 2005.

Kate Howard
Kate Howard would appear like any other 25 year-old woman on the face of things but the 8 stone gym tutor’s exploits on the weightlifting stage suggest otherwise. Kate has been teaching the Future Fit Training gym courses and assessments for two years whilst fitting in an international weightlifting career. Kate has competed at the European Weight Lifting Championships in Bulgaria in the 48kg category and is set to compete in the World Weight Lifting Championships in Melbourne in October this year. She is also in training for the Commonwealth Games in March 2006.
Kate has lead a colourful life living in Papua New Guinea and Dubai before moving to Hampshire to study Oceanography at University. Since then, the fitness bug has struck and Kate combines her love of exercise with her career.
Kate has turned into somewhat of a local celebrity with her weightlifting exploits, and I’m sure several articles could be written on her career alone! Having competed at the highest level and as fitness is her job Kate has become extremely knowledgeable and experienced in this field.
Gary Mendoza
After a formative career in the RAF Gary has over 13 years industry experience working within a variety of roles before he returned to education to become a Nutrition and Weight Management specialist

His findings are of huge interest to prestigious organisations such as the Nutrition Society and the International Society for Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity (ISBNPA)
As well as developing and delivering the suite of nutrition courses Gary regularly contributes to magazines and is a keynote speaker at many national and international exercise and health conferences. Gary has also worked closely with colleague Kate Howard advising her on optimal sports nutrition in her run-up to the World Weight Lifting Championships and Commonwealth Games
