How to teach a Pilates class
By Conrad Duckworth - Mat Pilates Tutor/Assessor
Many instructors still believe that Pilates is strictly for dancers and for the rich and famous such as Madonna and Liz Hurley. Did you know the British Olympic rowing team, including Matthew Pinsent and the New Zealand All Blacks, all complement their demanding physical training with Pilates?
Invented by Joseph Pilates over 80 years ago, the exercise programme stems from his own experience of Gymnastics, Weight Training, Yoga and Tai Chi.

The exercises were used by dancers recovering from injury, but soon became popular within the sport and fitness industry to build strength and correct posture. Injury prevention through internal strength and flexibility makes Pilates a wonderful complement to any training regime. Cardio fitness and sports training alike all benefit from this unique and wonderful exercise system, making it popular with men and women of all ages.
Beyond the physical, Pilates trains you to work with the breath, and focus within, bringing relaxation. It is a mind body experience, which teaches participants to block out the external and concentrate on each physical movement (athletes call this ‘the zone’).
As a teacher, the system will complement all your previous training and add to your C.V. as a most sought after skill, whether in the studio or one-to-one. It is not a fad and those who intend on a long and varied career in this industry are adding this discipline to their repertoire.
Teaching Pilates is wonderfully rewarding and satisfying, whether you teach tri-athletes, football players or those wanting to live a healthy lifestyle. It is growing in popularity every day and is a ‘must have’ for all fitness instructors/personal trainers and group exercise teachers.
Since training, teaching and practicing Pilates, I have grown as an instructor both in knowledge and teaching skills. My posture has improved and I experience less, if any, injuries. My timetable has expanded and my pay has increased!
