Gym Instructor Module
Once you have completed the Anatomy and Physiology theory, the next stage in becoming a Fitness
Instructor or Personal Trainer is the Gym Instructor Module. At the end of this Module, you get your Licence to Teach!After completing the Gym Instructor Course Workshop and
Assessment, you will have had the chance to learn:
- The role of the Gym Instructor
- The essential skills necessary to become a fitness
professional
- How to instruct and coach safe and effective
exercises
As a qualified Gym Instructor, clients will look to you for
guidance, counselling, and direction on all aspects of
fitness.
Gym Instructor Course - Practical Workshop
The Gym Instructor Course Practical Workshop sessions are held at a Future Fit Training Centre in your area, usually on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here, you will meet with the other students on your Gym Instructor Course. You will learn, first-hand from an experienced tutor, about the realities of instructing in an exercise and fitness facility. You’ll get the chance to prepare lessons and practise your gym instructor skills. The three-day Gym Instructor Course covers CV machines, resistance machines and free weights. You will learn how to devise exercise programmes, and instruct on the safe use of free weights and exercise machines.

You will learn how to devise safe and effective exercise
programmes and be given all the information you
need to prepare for your assessment.
At the end of your Gym Instructor Course, you will be provided with a Future Fit Training Gym Instructor DVD showing all the exercises you have been taught. This DVD will help you prepare for your assessment and will be a constant reference tool for correct exercise techniques.
Gym Instructor Course - Assessment
The theory for the Gym Instructor Course is assessed in a one hour multi-choice exam, which you take on the first day of the Practical Workshop. You get the chance to repeat the exam should you fail. The Practical assessment for the Gym Instructor Course follows typically at least four weeks after the last workshop.
The assessment includes both practical and written work, and meets the required standard for Stage 1 of the OCR NVQ Level 2 in Gym Instruction.
The Gym Instructor Course Awards
After passing the multi-choice exam and practical assessment, you will be awarded the Future Fit Training Stage 1 N/SVQ Gym Instructor Course Certificate – your licence to teach.
As a qualified Gym Instructor, clients will look to you for guidance, counselling, and direction on all aspects of fitness. After completing the Gym Instructor Course, you should be competent to advise and direct your clients on:
- the best ways to get fit and stay fit
- a range of exercise programmes
- the safe and effective use of equipment
- lifestyle enhancement
NVQ Level 2
Before being assessed for your full NVQ, you will need to build a portfolio of work-related evidence. This is not at all difficult. You will be provided with a Portfolio-building Resource Pack and Guide, and full tutorial support.
Following a period of work experience, and a successful 2nd Stage assessment, you will gain your full NVQ level 2 in Exercise and Fitness.
