Description

Developed in the 1920's by the legendary physical trainer Joseph H. Pilates, the Pilates method is a body conditioning fusion of western and eastern philosophies, focusing on
strengthening, lengthening and mobilising the body.

Aims and benefits

This Mat Pilates Fundamentals Module is designed to enable you to achieve the knowledge and skills necessary to teach this specialised movement technique at beginner level.
Pilates can be taught on a one-to-one basis or in a group exercise session and is recommended as an excellent additional skill to allow Studio Professionals or Personal Trainers to enhance their earnings..

Module format

Two-day Workshop, held at a weekend.

Module content

  • Health and safety guidelines The description and application of the Pilates Principles
  • The safe instruction of a variety of mat based Pilates exercises and the modifications, adaptations and progressions for each exercise
  • How to structure a beginner level mat class
  • Exploring suitable warm up and preparation exercises
  • Stretching to increase flexibility and release working muscles and joints
  • Pilates teaching techniques: effective layering of cues, the use of imagery and visualisations, handson correction, teaching position
  • Theory of global and postural muscle groups
  • The technique of breathing with movement
  • How to promote 'flow' into the class by incorporating effective smooth transitions.

Who should take this Module?
Any qualified teacher wanting to gain knowledge of Pilates Mat Work, to
either incorporate into existing one to one sessions or to set up and run Mat Work classes.

Assessment
The Practical Assessment for this Module follows typically at least four weeks after the Workshop. The assessment includes both practical and written work, and meets the required standard for Level 2 OCR Unit 9 Certified Practical Assessment Qualification.

Entry requirements

A recognised current Gym Instructor or ETM teaching qualification. In addition, a recognised Anatomy and Physiology qualification is also required.

Certification and credits (REPs)

After passing the assessment, you will be awarded the OCR Level 2 (Unit 9) Certificate in teaching Mat Based Pilates. You will also receive 16 REPs CPD points.

Pilates can be taught on a 1-2-1 basis or as a group exercise session and is an excellent skill for both
Studio Professionals and Personal Trainers.
