Zoann Medcalf takes a look at how to boost your earning power with a career in fitness.

Personal Trainer

Becoming a Personal Trainer is one of the best paid areas in the fitness industry as they are now in demand more than ever, they are accessible to everyone and no longer just working with a rich and famous client base.

If you choose to work freelance you could earn up to £50 per hour. Or, you can work for a gym or health club chain; some gyms provide you with a set number of hours per week and then a number of 'free' hours which you can then use in the gym to build up your own client base and you could look to earn anything in the region of £30,000. This option has the advantage of a secure income as well as a ready made client base.

Pilates Instructor

Another area with a high earning potential is Pilates, this form of exercise continues to grow in popularity as it has a wide appeal to many people of varying ages and capabilities.

A Pilates Instructor working for a leisure centre or health club can earn £20-£30 for a 1 hour class, (£30-£50 in London). If you decide to work for yourself and hire your own venue you could charge £6-£10 per person, so for example with a class of 15 participants that works out at £90-£150 per class. If you consider the number of classes you could fit into a week, and even in your spare time, it's definitely a career move worth making.

Studio Professional

As a Studio Professional you will have the enjoyment of watching people having fun while they exercise to routines you have put together. Working for a leisure centre or health club a 1 hour Exercise to Music class could earn you approximately £15-£30, (£30-£40 in London), however if you decided to organise hiring a hall and running your own class with approx 15 people charging £3.50-£6.00 per person, you could earn £50-£90 per class.

Nutrition Specialist

Usually self employed, a Nutrition Specialist can earn in the region of £20-£30, (£20-£40 in London) for an hour long 1-2-1 session. To really increase your earning potential in this area you may decide to set up your own weight management clinic. If you ran a 12 week course you could charge up to £120 per person, and you would only need 8 people to attend this course to earn approximately £80 per hour over the 12 week course. Imagine that doing with the fact that you're helping people to changhe their eating habits and achieve their goal weight!

Each of these disciplines has great earning potential and because they are flexible you can study in your own time, then once qualified earn in your own spare time or take that leap into a full time career.
