Gym Instructor

Once you have completed The Theory of Anatomy and Physiology the next stage in becoming a Personal Trainer is the Gym Instructor Module. At the end of this module, you’ll have your license to teach.

Overview

During this module you will learn in a live environment, from an experienced Tutor, about how to teach and instruct in an exercise and fitness facility.

Why is it included?

This module teaches you the skills that are essential for the planning, coaching and evaluation of a successful 1-2-1 gym session and also provides underpinning knowledge in preparation for the Personal Trainer and Advanced Instructor Module, which is essential in becoming a Personal Trainer.

Module format

A 3-day workshop covering theory and practical elements.

Module content

The module covers:

  • stretching
  • CV machines
  • resistance machines
  • free-weights.


You will learn how to device safe and effective exercise programmes and be given all the information you need to prepare for your assessment.

Assessment

The practical assessment typically occurs at least 4 weeks after the workshop. To help you prepare for the workshop and assessment, you are provided with a DVD prior to your course, which demonstrates all the exercises you have learned, along with all of the teaching points you will need to know. The assessment includes both practical and written work and you’ll be required to bring along a friend to use as a ‘client’ for your practical assessment.

Entry requirements

You must be 18 or above, and should have regularly attended a gym. You should also obtain a CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) qualification before attending your practical assessment.

Certification and credits (REPs)

After passing the practical assessment, you will be awarded the Future Fit Training Level 2 Gym Instructor Certificate - your license to teach. You will also receive 20 REPs CPD points.
